Turkle

Sherry Turkle claims that the mobile devices that are connecting us actually make us more isolated.  However, she is making a large generalization that everyone has the same definition of lonely. Image two people entering a room one excited and energized after a long day at work, ready to talk to more people.  The other drained and tried not wanting to have a conversation about their day. Let's say they have the same job, but one is an introvert and the other is an extrovert. Punishing one over the other because they don't feel the same way as you, is not very self-aware.

  1. Perhaps it is my own background and the fact I grew up without the technology that is out there today, however I think Turkle is correct when she says that technology has made us more isolated. Being "alone" and being "lonely" have two very different meaning. Being alone doesn't necessarily mean you are lonely. Yes you can be alone in a crowd but it would depend on if the feeling is of loneliness.

  2. You make a good point Sasha, Turkle focuses so heavily on the isolating aspects of online communications that I'm not sure the positive ones were fully explored.

  3. I agree with you , I think she needed to specify more and give a good example.
